A survey conducted by Remitly, a U.S.-based digital financial services company, gathered insights from over 3,000 participants worldwide using the Big 5 personality test to assess social friendliness. A higher score indicated that respondents were “friendly, generous, and willing to compromise personal interests for the benefit of others.” The results placed South Africa at the top with a score of 34.46 out of 40.
Remitly noted that South Africans are naturally warm and welcoming, helping tourists feel comfortable and at ease. They are known for their cheerful demeanor, love for storytelling, and eagerness to greet strangers. Another advantage for visitors is South Africa’s multilingual culture, with 11 official languages, including English, Afrikaans, and nine indigenous tongues, making it easier to form connections.
